CASE Studies - IL +VIA Mobile app ux design

Intralinks and VIA Mobile App Design

Background

During my tenure at Intralinks from 2015 to 2017, I was tasked with the mobile UX design of the Intralinks iOS and Android apps, as well as Intralinks’ VIA, a consumer file management app. My primary objective was to enhance the app’s multi-channel experience through the implementation of a native components design strategy, ensuring optimized performance across iPhones and iPads, which was a significant advantage at the time.

Key Responsibilities

1. Customer Insights and Research:

  • Conducted an audit of existing customers and their usage patterns to gain valuable insights into their needs and preferences.
  • Actively participated in User Experience Research (UXR) to uncover the tasks and information our customers required from the mobile experience of Intralinks.

2. Re-architecture and Design Implementation:

  • Led the re-architecture of the mobile Intralinks apps, addressing technical constraints that initially prevented app store publication.
  • Focused on achieving app design parity with native UI components, resulting in the successful launch of upgraded app versions that met both technical and design standards.

3. Beta Program Management:

  • Managed the ongoing beta program for the IL and VIA apps, serving as a crucial step in validating designs and troubleshooting potential issues before release.
  • Recruited beta participants through company-wide email blasts and onboarded them via a SurveyMonkey sign-up form.
  • Beta participants completed predefined tasks and reported their experiences through structured surveys, providing valuable feedback for continuous improvement.

4. Stakeholder Engagement and Continuous Improvement:

  • Documented and published beta feedback on Confluence for stakeholders, product owners, and users.
  • After completing new functionalities during or after a sprint, pushed the apps to iTunesConnect for testing and validation of design.
  • Facilitated ongoing stakeholder feedback and engagement throughout the release timeframe, ensuring continuous improvement and alignment with user needs and expectations.

Outcome

Through these efforts, the Intralinks and VIA mobile apps achieved significant improvements in user experience and performance. The implementation of native components design strategy and the re-architecture of the apps allowed for their successful launch on the app store. The beta program and continuous stakeholder engagement ensured that the apps met user needs and expectations, leading to a more refined and user-centric product.
